Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend

We spent the long weekend up in the mountains visiting Oma and Opa  We all had lots of fun!  As usual we went hiking.  This time Josh continued on longer than the boys and I did.  He did a 13 mile hike with full pack to practice for his 30 mile hike coming up in October.  Obviously the boys wouldn’t last that long so we headed home and picked him up a couple house later.

If you look closely in the photo above you may spot a copperhead snake.  Jack came across this snake when he went a little ahead of Josh and me (yes, he knows better than to do that but clearly it didn’t stop him).  The next thing we knew is we heard Jack screaming about a snake.  We ran up to him and saw this guy.  He was already past the snake and thus safe, but just seeing it scared him to death.  The rest of us went through the woods to get around the snake since he was right on the path.

Jack’s Birthday

Jack’s Birthday

It’s been over a month now but here are a few photos from Jack’s birthday. He had lots of fun celebrating at home and then on a long weekend in the mountains with Oma and Opa.

It was an action packed weekend with a birthday picnic at Oskar Blues and  Oreo torte for dessert.  We went apple picking, hiking, camping and rock climbing!  The boys love the Oma and Op live in such an awesome location. We love all the outdoor activities we do up there!

Hard to believe Jack is now 8 years old. Won’t be long before that tall boy towers over me!

First Family Camping Trip

First Family Camping Trip

Okay so I’m still catching up! I’ve been moving pictures from my phone to the laptop and have unearthed more moments to share. Back in June we went up to Oma and Opa’s newly renovated house. They just moved in and weren’t even settled in yet, but we went anyway!!

We went on our first overnight hike/camping trip. It was quite an adventure! First off Ewan was getting over a stomach bug. He was no longer running a fever and seemed fine when we left home to head up to the mountains. Well WRONG!!! We were so close to the house when he called out that he felt like he was going to be sick. I immediately pulled off the country road and he managed to unbuckle his seatbelt and vomit out the window. We stopped two more times for this! Let the good times roll….

Ewan remained tired the rest of the evening, no big surprise. The next morning he seemed fine and still wanted to go camping. So away we went after lunch. All the boys started carrying their own backpacks.

Camping

This didn’t last long!! Josh was carrying Sean’s bag pretty soon after we started. It took longer for the other boys but eventually they didn’t carry anything. It isn’t easy carrying everything for a family of five up a mountain….bottled water, tent, food… The perk is that on the way back the load is much less as we consumed the water and much of the food.

We finally found a good spot to spend the night. Josh put up the tent which got the boys extremely excited. They played around in the tent for a while. They were beside themselves with energy and excitement. We hiked around the nearby area to explore and then it was time to fix dinner.

Before we left the house earlier I cooked up some ground beef and baked beans which we brought along for dinner. All we had to do was heat it up. In this part of the forest campfires aren’t allowed so cooking dinner was tricky and we decided just heating something up was easiest. Josh had some camp stoves somebody at work loaned him and they worked quite well.

By this point Ewan was eating again but Jack complained about his waist hurting. Luckily he never got sick. He just didn’t eat as much as his usual. Sean never did complain of any problems. What an adventure indeed!

Once the sun started setting it was time for some popcorn. The boys were thrilled about this of course. The first batch pretty much burned to a crisp! The next two batches went better. Cooking with the alcohol stove had a bit of a learning curve!!

The night was a little rough. The boys seemed to go to the bathroom, A LOT! By the time one boy was done another one would ask to go. We had to open the tent and give them a head light. It was also extremely windy, therefore very noisy. And don’t forget that sleeping on the ground, without a pillow, is very uncomfortable. The boys slept relatively well, especially Sean, Josh and I not so much though.

It was nice and cool in the morning, quite a refreshing change from hot South Carolina!! The boys were complaining about the cold, not that is was that cold in the low 60s. The sunrise was gorgeous! We made some oatmeal for breakfast and added peanut butter and brown sugar. This warmed everyone up a bit, though Jack still barely ate.

Oops, I almost forgot to mention that Ewan lost a tooth the day we hiked up. Somehow the Tooth Fairy managed to find him in the tent overnight!!!

Camping

After resting a little and then packing everything up it was time to head out. The boys weren’t thrilled about carrying their backpacks again, but at least they were a little lighter! Sean only carried his for maybe two minutes before he gave it to me!!

Josh decided given their lazy moods we would go for a shortcut. So instead up going up and down several times we went around the mountain instead. In theory this was great, unfortunately it led us through some wet areas. Wet shoes and socks are not exactly comfortable. We made it though, with a lot of complaining and “can we stop”, “are we almost there”, “how much farther”….

All in all it was a fun adventure. It’s fun to see how the boys enjoy nature. We’ve learned several things for the next camping trip. I know, can you believe there is actually going to be another camping trip?? Somehow I agreed to it and we are going again soon. Josh is the one most excited!!

Good Clean Mountain Fun

Good Clean Mountain Fun

Spending the weekend in the mountains is always fun. This time it is a full house with the five of us plus Oma, Opa and our dog Cosmo! Good times are being had by all.

Yesterday it was the White Squirrel Festival. Last night a date night for me and Josh at a fabulous new Mexican restaurant. Today a hike and then a trip to Dolly’s Dairy Bar for ice cream. What a tough choice…..they added many new flavors for the summer camp season. We all enjoyed every last lick, especially the boys.

Watching the rain this morning out the bedroom window.
